Friend Development- Pathfinder Guide
2 February 2016
For this requirement, I recommend
assigning 2 (or 3) speakers on different topics.
Assign one speaker on the topic
of choosing a career. Considering that Guide class is already in a position of
considering various career choices, I recommend this presentation to be a study
of various unexplored Career options and to give full overview of industries
which need more students to consider. Teenagers need to understand that the
rate of unemployment is very high and that choosing a career is no longer a
matter of getting a degree but that you need to consider what is available, the
pros and cons of each industry and possibly enter in industries which are less
popular.
The other speaker can discuss on
the matter of moral behavior, sex, dating and choosing a life partner. A person
who presents on this topic needs to understand that at this stage teenagers
know everything! The speaker needs to be frank and tell it like it is!
A speaker who will want to ‘respect’
certain words and use euphemism is most irrelevant for the guide class. As a
Director, seek someone who will speak out comfortably even on topics such as
sex.

Considering that the topic of
Peer Pressure may have been discussed in Explorer class, I would recommend
inviting Voyagers to the session held under Peer Pressure and then arranging a special
speaker for them to discuss on earning and spending money and another speaker
under the topic of self-concept or human relationships.
As a Director, you need to go out
of your way to ensure the presence of the most relevant speaker to address such
topics and this needs to be well arranged in advance and the Pathfinders should
also be prepared in advance for such a speaker. I would recommend arranging 2
speakers and on worst case scenario and a speaker cancels last minute, you
would have another 1. I would also recommend you brief the Pathfinders of the
topic and require them to prepare questions about the topic in advance. I would
even have a reward for the most participating Pathfinder. This will help both
the speaker and the smooth run of the class session.
You then can share your token of
appreciation to the presenter and then arrange a testing of what was taught in
class.

I would advise the Director to
pre-arrange specialized speakers for this session. You can arrange for a person
such as a social worker, psychologist or a person of such caliber to present on
this session. The topics for them to touch on are; self-confidence; friendship;
social graces and will power.
Do note that the curriculum
requires at least 2 of the topics but my experience with Pathfinder Investiture
has been that Invigilators can ask the Pathfinders on any of the 4 topics,
rather equip them on all 4 topics.
As a Director, you need to give,
whoever you appointed the task of presenting on these topics, a scope of which
specific areas they need to present on. A lot can be said on all those topics,
your scope will provide a guideline of which questions the presentation needs
to answer. You also need to allocate a set time for the presentation and ensure
that the Pathfinders are on time so as to not interfere with your time
allocation.
Whenever you call on such a
speaker, I recommend you arrange a token of appreciation and preferably assign
a Pathfinder to be the one to give this token to the guest presenter.
Furthermore, encourage the Pathfinders to pay attention by arranging a test
after every such session.

Peer pressure is one of dreaded
phases which most teenagers go through. It affects the decision making of a
teenager as every decision is decided by one member of the group. If
uncontrolled, peer pressure can easily lead disciplined teens to bad behaviors
such as bullying, drugs, drinking, smoking and premature dating.
Teenagers need to be taught the
important trait of assertiveness from a young age. The vast majority is not
always right and if something is wrong, it remains wrong even if it is done by
the vast majority of people.
Actively discuss areas of peer
pressure in a form of a skit. Properly plan for this skit and present it in
front of the entire Pathfinder group.
Having already completed your
involvement with municipal offices, I would waive the requirement of making a
tour around Municipal offices, as it easily can be accomplished in Community
Outreach.
Depending on what form of community outreach you pursued, this
requirement can either be relevant or irrelevant
Friend Development- Pathfinder Companion

People of all cultures and races
should be respected the same way. God sees no black nor white nor foreigner. In
the eyes of God, we are all His children.
Where possible, invite a
foreigner to participate in a panel of discussion or special presentation.
Touch base on areas such as differences they have observed between their
culture and our culture; how they are treated because of their difference; what
message do they wish to bring across to the attention of everyone; what do they
wish to see differently?...
Elaborate on the practicality of
the Golden Rule, ‘Do unto others as you would have them do to you’
To make such a lesson most
effective, plan out a role-play for the Companion class to share with the rest
of the Pathfinder classes.
The narrator of the role-play
should highlight the importance of treating people of other cultures the same
way as we would want to be treated.
